Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at Auckland Hospital. We hope that you will enjoy your time here and find it both interesting and challenging. This handbook provides an introduction to the unit and the expectations while you are here. In addition it will provide information on various procedures and aspects of intensive care that you may not have previously been exposed to.

This handbook is intended as a guide and not a prescriptive resource. There will be times when it is necessary and appropriate to deviate from the information that is provided here. In addition although this information will be kept updated, medicine is constantly evolving and improving. If there are differences in practice than what is presented here then please let us know in order that this resource can be updated.
